walking

My house is about 2 miles from downtown San Antonio...Together with Cousin Jeff, the decision was made that Saturday would be a good day to take a walk. So we did just that.

We walked. In an increasingly unwalkable city, we walked. And our meandering journey that took us past Shag, the Alamo, and the G&M Steakhouse (home of the $5.99 steak dinner) saw us log 8.5 miles. I think we rested at two bus stops. We also circled a downtown block twice looking for a non-existent BBQ joint, realized that energy drinks do not make good walking partners, and generally just enjoyed seeing the city at 3 mph.

You can check out Jeff's blog for a random photo montage of the day. Also, you can calculate your WalkScore by clicking this link and entering your address. Post them in the comments section. It should be interesting to see how walkable your world is...

  2. If anyone is out to get high walkability, check out the Vistana, an apartment building going up at Houston and Santa Rosa, which is supposed to have a grocery and a number of small shops, right downtown.

I'd kind of be interested, but I expect the rent would be higher than I care to pay.

  3. Good observation Jay..but actually, the rent at the vistana is actually fairly reasonable. i just completed a bank on the first floor (Sterling Bank - corner of houston and santa rosa) and through my convo's with the building architect and leasing agents, i found that a single unit loft is going for around $700 / month. not too shabby considering the luxuries the building offers and the fact that everything is new. so far, the only solidified tenant is the bank we did, but rumor has it that a pharmacy type tenant will also occupy...so what else do you need, money, pills, bread and milk. walkabilty = 100!!!

  4. I would assume the site would not reflect the planned walkability, as the project is not yet complete.

  5. my neighborhood is blighted Jay. if the empty storefronts had coffee shops and banks in them, my walkscore would be much higher. as it is, my house gets a 51.

  11. Darn it... I would have loved to go on the walk. Stupid canoe trip. I remember that you, John George, and I went to the G/M steakhouse when we came to visit years ago. Haven't been back since...
