san antonio runs on dunkin?

Somebody tell me how the 7th largest city in the United States only has one Dunkin' Donuts...

I guess I shouldn't complain. Every once in a while, Stef and I pack up the wee one and make the drive to the "real west side" (since we live in the "yuppie west side" or so I am told) to visit San Antonio's only Dunkin' Donuts. We load up on coffee (check this website), donuts, and our monthly allowance of powdered sugar. It is glory.

I don't know what it is about a Dunkin' Donuts that is so great. I know that one of my few requests upon returning form Africa was that, while in New York City, I wanted to swing by a shop and grab a dozen donuts. I had the greatest city in the world at my disposal and no agenda whatsoever. I wanted donuts. What can you do...?

My favorite: Bavarian Kreme. Yours?

  1. If you had ever made donuts, especially bavarian creme, with your own bare hands (and then spent three days trying to scrub the grease and lard out of every pore of your body) you would not be as interested as you are today -- but, I love you!

  2. There used to be another one on Culebra before 1604. I guess San Antonio just isn't a donut town. Maybe between HEB and Krispy Kreme there's no room for competition?

  3. daniel - i don't want to know. bavaria is a magical place, like wonkaland, and the kreme from there is liquid gold.

jay - krispy kreme has nothing on the boys from dunkin.

  4. When I was a kid, my father would wake up super early on the 1st Sunday of every month to have Dunkin' Donuts waiting for us when we woke. Oh how I loved those days!

    MMM, bavarian kreme!

  5. I didn't say Krispy Kreme was better than Dunkin Donuts. I'm just saying that people are more likely to get their donuts at HEB or Krispy Kreme, so other places can't expand. Up until recently, there was a Dunkin Donuts on Culebra between 410 and 1604, but I guess business wan't very good. Besides, in this town people have breakfast tacos for breakfast, and donuts are second or third fiddle, so there's not a huge market here.

  7. These places, they don't exist. Except for the Airport Blvd one which is in the terminal. Doubt anyone cares to book an airplane flight just to get some donuts.

  8. Dunkin is very rare here in Kansas City. We went to Chicago last year and were really amazed at just how many DDs there are in that town. Chicago really does run on Dunkin, and 7-11, and Walgreens. Those seemed to be about the only stores.

  9. Faulty info on the internet. Go figure. I know I saw one on Bandera, must've closed. :(

  10. there was one on bandera as recently as 2 years ago.

i used to make my runs there. they closed, reopened under some name like "daylight donuts" and then closed again.

for now - just one left.

there are plans to open as many as 75 new store in SA... http://www.mysanantonio.com/business/MYSA090807_01D_Dunkin_Donuts_2b8d77c_html.html
